The Bursary Fund

From its foundation in 1855, Cheadle Hulme School has been committed to the education of young people, irrespective of financial means. The School came into existence in order to provide an education for those in need, hence the School's original name: The Manchester Warehousemen and Clerks’ Orphan School. This education was paid for by subscription and by charitable donation.

Over the years, the School has had to adapt to changing economic, political and social trends and now sits proudly as an independent, co-educational day School. However, over the years we have not forgotten our heritage nor our founding ethos and the School remains committed to ensuring that it remains accessible to all.

There is real merit in widening access: peers of different socio-economic and ethnic backgrounds enrich the school experience and provide a twenty-first century requirement; awareness of other cultures, perspectives and experiences.

The Bursary Trust Fund was set up during the School’s 150th anniversary year and now sits at £3.9 million thanks to the generosity of Old Waconians, parents and Charitable Trusts. Each year the Trust donates around £100,000 a year to the School to fund bursaries. This money is added to the School’s annual contribution of just over £1 million which together supports around 100 students, of which 40 are fully funded bursary places. This means that 10% of students in the Senior School receive some form of bursarial support.

Despite this level of income, we are not able to support all of those talented young people who cannot afford the opportunity to attend CHS. Please join our community in supporting the Fund to make a difference to future generations.

Our ambition is to grow the level of the Bursary Fund to £5 million by 2020.

How you have helped

A Year Nine student proves that extraordinary achievements can be made, despite a difficult start in life, when there is help available; 

“After spending my early years in care, I was adopted along with my siblings. I attended the local state primary school, and after a shaky start I began to love learning, particularly reading. One of my teachers spoke to my parents and suggested I sit the exam for Cheadle Hulme School.

We were always aware of CHS as we live locally, but knew that whilst it would give me the chance to accomplish more, it wouldn’t be an option without financial support. 

Thanks to the Bursary Fund, I am loving my education and the opportunities open to me. I play hockey, sing in the choir, and have been abroad on a school trip. My friends know I am on a Bursary but I have never been made to feel any different. People talk about the CHS family, and it really does exist.

I’ve learnt more about the Bursary Fund and the fact that former students give back to their old school. My family and I think it’s an amazing thing to do to improve others’ prospects and are so grateful to the Old Waconians who have contributed to enable me to attend CHS”.**
