Crystalline Creations
The Chemistry laboratories were sparkling when Year 9 students took part in a crystal growing competition sponsored by the University of Leeds.
Part of the university’s Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths initiative (STEM), students were challenged to grow the largest copper sulphate crystal, using 300g of copper sulphate, water and the usual School Chemistry equipment.
The winning team, which won £10 for each student, tied its initial seed crystal using a human hair and after four weeks of growth produced a stunning, symmetrical crystal (pictured).
