La Vie En France
Senior School linguists gained real-life experience of life in a foreign language, when they took part in a French exchange with students from Caen, in Normandy.
Over 20 students from Years 10 to 12 hosted guests from France for a week, attending lessons at CHS and introducing them to English culture before travelling to Caen to stay with their counterparts, during the Easter break.
Year 10 student, Bethan Davis said: “Our first weekend with the French families thrust us into French conversation, isolating us from our native tongue. This was an interesting experience as it taught everyone new vocabulary and colloquialisms which proved useful for the rest of our stay.”
Students visited historic locations on their trip, visiting the Normandy landing beaches and Mont Saint Michel, before saying their final farewells and returning to the UK after a week of living in the homes of their French counterparts.
“Everyone agreed that the trip improved our French by miles,” Bethan continued, “some of us even remarking that we had involuntarily been thinking in French or automatically translating English sentences in French in our heads!”
The French exchange programme is an annual event at CHS, allowing students to immerse themselves in the language and gain extra confidence and knowledge of French culture from the new friends they make.
