CHS’s U19 and U13 netball teams are celebrating after making it through to the semi-finals of the Independent Schools Netball Cup – and CHS is the only school in the country to have two age groups left in this stage of the National competition!
Winning their quarter-final match 31-30 vs. Royal Russell School in Croydon, the U19 team join the U13s as the top 4 teams in the country.
In a nail-biting battle to the end, CHS went 2 down in the 3rd quarter before taking a lead of 5 in the final quarter. Royal Russell pulled it back to level until CHS took the lead with just 45 seconds left on the clock.
With 35 seconds remaining, CHS’s opposition had possession and could have potentially drawn level. CHS defended hard and after Royal Russell made an error, CHS took possession with Zoe Mallinder (Captain) and Grace Mills (Vice-Captain) taking control, dictating play until the end.
CHS Netball Coach, Olivia Barber said: “The team played with composure and discipline throughout, even with physical opposition and a close score line. We always aspire to get to the finals but know every game will be tough. In both our top 16 and quarter final we have only won by 1.”
“The girls are dedicated to training and have the desire to win. They are a strong unit and work for each other. We know all opposition will be tough but have so many strong options within our squad we can adapt to anyone we come across.”
As the teams lead up their semi-final draws, they will now be practising hard with focus on playing fast-pace, possession netball.
Both semi-finals will be played after half term. The U19s draw will be sent out next week and the U13s will play in Bristol at Redmaids.
