An Ode to Heroes of War
Year 9 English students have produced a demo charity single, helping to promote awareness of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder for the charity Combat Stress.
The students were inspired to take on the project during their study of World War I poetry and the suicide of a local soldier, following a long battle with PTSD.
English Teacher, Mrs Ruth Huish said: “When the students discovered the sad news which happened in their local community, it encouraged a much greater empathetic response to the texts we were studying and a desire to help raise awareness of the condition.”
Working in groups, students used their understanding of poetry and their research on the subject of PTSD to produce catchy demos, suitable for the charity to use.
One of the recordings was submitted to Combat Stress, who commented: “We were very moved by the song. The students really connected with the subject matter and powerfully conveyed the debilitating condition of PTSD.”
Mrs Huish continued: “I’m very proud of all the students’ sympathetic response to the project and we are now hoping to produce a larger-scale version of the song, with a full choir.”
