Smooth Sailing for James
Year 11 sailor, James continues to cause a stir in the water, this summer competing in his first major U18 international competition and earning the U16 Junior National Champion crown.
Sailing with friend Dan, who takes the helm with James as crew, the pair launched their summer campaign at Flanders Youth Regatta in their 420 boat, their first international event in this category, coming seventh overall and finishing as the third GBR boat out of a fleet of 28.
In August, they became Junior National Champions, finishing eighth overall in the British National Championships.
Immediately following their Nationals success, the team gained another seventh placement in the Junior European Championships, in Pwllheli. This was another major achievement for the boys, as no other Transition Squad boat had ever qualified for the Junior Europeans before. They were the second placed GBR boat at the event.
James said: “We sailed in a range of different and challenging weather conditions; big winds and big seas! I’m really pleased with how we did, though.
“The independence of travelling to the different competitions was great and I really enjoy meeting the other sailors.”
James and Dan now has their sights set on gaining selection for the GBR Youth Squad, with three gruelling events coming up to test their skills at the most elite level.
