Talking Communications
CHS students were recently visited from the Head of Media at English Heritage and Old Waconian, Beth McHattie (Class of 1980), to chat to them about careers in communications.
Beth believes that communications is not: “just an ‘add-on’ anymore but crucial to an organisation’s strategy and implementations,  as well as being a transferable skill across other employment sectors.” She had plenty of advice for the students and told them to: “Be hungry for news, ask how it works, how they made the news, how does it get into papers and how does it start to trend on Twitter.”
The students also got to learn more about Beth’s role, which involves lots of campaigns from making deals with ITV to restoring a Victorian rollercoaster. She even involved the students in helping her choose which campaign she should run, along with the help of TV presenter Dan Snow, to go alongside World War One commemorative campaigns.
