Words and Pictures
Infant pupils gained literary and artistic inspiration during a visit from award winning children’s author and illustrator, Jan Fearnley.
Reading from her most recent book, Flying Like Flittermouse, and demonstrating her use of illustrations to bring the story to life, Jan captivated pupils in the Junior School Hall.
Jan’s varied career, including a background in advertising, illustration and teaching, has led her to become a successful author of books for young children, recognisable by their colourful and detailed illustrations.
She says: “Listening to a story read out loud is our first experience of literature, and if it’s a good story, read well, it is an intoxicating experience. And then, if the pictures convey their own narrative, a snapshot into another world, it can be magic.”
Jan, who stayed to sign pupils’ copies of her books, left the Infants inspired, urging them to create their own stories and pictures based on her characters.
