CHS U10s Rugby: Victory at Heywood Road

CHS’s U10 Rugby team enjoyed a glorious afternoon at Heywood Road, the former home of Sale Sharks and now home of National 2 team Sale FC, when they took on new and unknown opponents Brooklands School. The boys were particularly excited to be playing in a real stadium!

The fast pace offloading game that CHS has been working on all season was evident, and led to three unanswered tries in the first 10 minutes. Great leadership and determination by Oscar Davies kept the team moving forward and the ball alive.

During the second two periods of play Brooklands showed their strength at the break-down, turning over a number of Cheadle rucks which gave them more possession and opportunities to attack. CHS frustration led them to stray from the game plan and resort to one up runners. Although this was not a roaring success, Jack Hallam demonstrated his power, punching holes throughout the Brooklands defence on numerous occasions.

The teams were level at 5-5 going into the final 10 minutes. Brooklands started with the ball and targeted Woody Brown. To their dismay he ripped the ball in the tackle and outpaced the rest of the team to score a brilliant individual try from half way. Brooklands fought back and it was down to the outstanding defensive effort of Dan Jones that they were only able to score one try during a six minute period of possession in the Cheadle half.

The final score was an 8-6 victory to CHS. Once again Junior School Teachers and Team Coaches Mr Cooke and Mr Cartwright were very impressed with the way the CHS boys played, and how they have developed their game over the last year. Responding to feedback and paying attention at training on Thursdays has really paid off.

Whilst not in the habit of choosing a man of the match, a special mention must go to Dan Jones. His defensive determination was second to none; holding an opposition try up over the line before driving the player back out of the danger zone was a particular highlight for the teachers.
