Cheadle Hulme School has a long tradition of providing financial assistance to talented young people, offering them the opportunity of a high quality education. Over the years many pupils have attended the School with help from the bursary; this has benefitted not only the individuals themselves, but also the whole School community, reinforcing our belief that the provision of bursaries enriches the School, enhances academic standards, and widens educational opportunity for pupils from a wide range of social backgrounds.
We are continually seeking contributions to the fund from a wide variety of sources and, through it, we aim to provide financial support to a growing number of pupils each year using the income from the invested funds.
We provide a number of bursaries, on a means-tested basis, to the families of able pupils who are unable to afford the School fees.
Applications are welcome from all families who feel that their sons or daughters will benefit from the academic education we offer, regardless of their ability to pay fees. One of the strengths of the School is our socially diverse community and we are keen to continue this tradition.
For entry in 2017/18 households with a total gross income exceeding £54,000 are unlikely to qualify for financial assistance. Households with a total gross income amounting to less than £22,000 may qualify for a full bursary and there is a sliding scale between these extremes. Income includes salaries, profits of business, pensions, investment income, property income, redundancy payments, social security benefits (including Working Family Tax Credits and Child Tax Credits), maintenance and any other income. In addition, the value of assets, including property, is taken into account. Currently, the cost of uniform is in the region of £300 to start. On application to the Bursary, you may receive financial help with the purchase of uniform and bus fares. Optional lunches, at £3.25 per day are not considered for financial assistance; however funds may be available to help with the cost of educational trips.
We are aware that personal circumstances can change very quickly and, wherever possible, we aim to support any child whose family suffers an unforeseen financial crisis while he/she is a pupil at the School. All enquiries in this regard should be directed to the Finance Officer, Carol Leonard. Once admitted to the School, we try our best to ensure that no child has to leave for financial reasons, within the constraints of the Bursary funds available.
From time to time, due to the sensitive nature of some applications, it may be necessary to inform key staff members of students who have been awarded Bursaries. We’d like to reassure families that any information received as part of the Bursary application process will remain confidential.
For entry into Year 7
All bursaries are offered according to a child’s performance in the School’s Entrance Examination, their interview and current school record.
On Tuesday 28th February 2017 the School will write to the parents of all Year 7 applicants. If your child was successful in the Entrance Examination you will receive a formal offer of a place together with details of any bursary to be awarded.
For entry into Years 8, 9 and 10
Applications for bursaries will be considered individually. Please contact the Registrar for further details in the first instance.
For entry into the Sixth Form
Any offer of a bursary place is conditional upon GCSE results. A preliminary guide to the level of support that may be offered will be supplied in advance of GCSE results. Full details of any bursary award will be confirmed once the GCSE results are known and a place has been confirmed.
As indicated above, family incomes are reviewed annually and the value of any bursary awarded may go down or up, according to our scales if your income rises or falls. You will therefore be asked to provide an update of your financial details at the end of the Lower Sixth year.
