CHS hosted its annual CHEDx event, an evening dedicated to big ideas, confident communication and intellectual curiosity. The event saw 23 pupils take to the stage to deliver 3-minute talks on a topic of their choice, presenting in front of a panel of judges and an audience of parents and staff.
Pupils from Years 8 to 13 took part, speaking on subjects ranging from the mysteries of deep space to the ethics of our past. This year’s winners covered an impressive range of topics: Chloe and Hannah explored how women in STEM shaped our world, while Alethea spoke on the power of music. Freddie delved into the “Great Nothing” of the Boötes Void, and Thomas gave a perspective on the stress and little recognition at school.
In the Upper School, winners included Nicole, for her talk on the universal blood type, and Zak, who explained how the laws of physics show the flow of time isn’t uniform. Others were highly commended for thoughtful and engaging presentations on a variety of compelling subjects. Judges praised the pupils not only for the originality of their perspectives, but also for their clarity, composure and ability to meaningfully connect with a live audience.
Deputy Head (Academic), Mr Axon remarked: “It was a delight to see students from across the age range present their ideas with such enthusiasm, confidence and eloquence. Each talk grabbed the audience’s attention and made us care deeply about their issue, whether it was the power of music, the role of surgical robots or the dominance of irrational economics. Students even managed to balance their sophisticated arguments with a dose of humour, ensuring everyone enjoyed a thought-provoking and entertaining evening.”
CHEDx draws its inspiration from the School’s involvement as a sponsor of TEDx Manchester, acting as a local stage for our students to find their voices. Next month, a team of Sixth Form students will be returning to the event to volunteer as part of the front-of-house team, gaining valuable real-world experience while supporting one of the city’s flagship events.
The development of oracy remains a priority across all year groups; on 26 February, the focus shifts to our Year 7 students as they host their own dedicated CHEDx event, giving our youngest students a platform to find their voices and share their big ideas, too.
