STEM Racing at CHS

STEM Racing at CHS is one of the most dynamic and fast-growing co-curricular programmes for Senior School and Sixth Form students.

FUTURE-READY

Formerly known as F1 in Schools, the competition is internationally recognised and supported by Formula One and the wider motorsport and engineering industries. CHS teams regularly achieve national success while developing the skills that prepare them for life beyond school.

From initial concept and design through to testing and competition, students build and run their own teams, collaborating with companies and organisations through sponsorship and brand partnerships.

Over the past eight years, CHS has had nine teams compete at the National Finals, with one progressing to the World Finals, supported by industry partners, including Aston Martin.

Over time, the programme has become a natural choice for students considering careers in engineering, design and related industries.

Each year, experienced students mentor new teams, passing on their knowledge and helping to shape what comes next.

STEM RACING national finals 2026

CH Sonic and CHS Ignition competed at the 2026 National Finals.

Having competed three times over the past four years, CH Sonic came 7th out of 600 teams.  The team will now go on to mentor the teams competing in 2027 giving them the benefit of their experience.

As the STEM Racing programme continues to grow, CHS is keen to develop further partnerships with organisations interested in supporting and developing the next generation of engineers, designers and problem-solvers, building  skills that are directly aligned with future industry needs.

“Both teams worked together so brilliantly to solve problems, manage deadlines and engage with their sponsors. Reaching the National Finals is a significant achievement putting them in the top 60 of over 600 teams that have competed in the UK over the past 12 months.

From those who have been through it

Hear from Audrey, an Old Waconian, Class of 2023, whose team won the National Finals, as she reflects on the experience and the skills developed through STEM Racing, from teamwork, leadership to problem-solving.

Many Old Waconians involved in STEM Racing stay connected through our CHS Community, including a growing Engineering Network.
