At CHS we believe education is at its best when it brings together young people from a wide range of backgrounds, perspectives and experiences.
Through the 1 in 6 Campaign, our ambition is to open CHS to more talented young people whose financial circumstances might otherwise put CHS education beyond reach.
From 1 in 11 to 1 in 6
THE AMBITION
Today, around 1 in 11 pupils at CHS benefits from financial assistance. Our long-term ambition is to increase this to 1 in 6.
We know this won’t happen overnight. We are working towards it progressively, increasing the number of bursary places as funding allows while ensuring the support we offer remains meaningful for the families who need it.
This is about more than increasing a number. Widening access helps preserve something that has always been important to CHS: a school where young people from different circumstances learn alongside one another and where talent and potential are not limited by a family’s ability to pay.

1 in 6 is an ambitious goal. Reaching it will depend on the collective support of parents, Old Waconians and friends of CHS over many years.
Whether through a regular donation, a major gift or a gift in your Will, every contribution helps us take another step towards opening CHS to more young people.
Questions about supporting the 1 in 6 Campaign
What is a Bursary at CHS?
A Bursary is a form of financial assistance to help cover fees for students whose families may not be able to afford the full cost of a CHS education. Bursaries are awarded based on financial need and can range from 10% to 100% fee remission, depending on the specific circumstances of the family. A small number of 110% Transformational Bursaries are awarded to looked after children referred to us by our partner, Royal National Children’s Springboard Foundation.

Can I fund a particular type of bursary?
Yes. While gifts to the Bursary Trust allow us to direct funding where the need is greatest, we understand that some donors may wish to support an area that reflects their own interests or passions.
Opportunities include STEM, Creative, Young Carers and Transformational Bursaries and we are happy to discuss how a significant gift could support a particular area or group of pupils.
Can I make a regular gift?
Absolutely. Regular gifts provide valuable, dependable support and are an important part of helping us make sustained progress towards 1 in 6.
Whether you choose to give £10, £25, £50, £100 a month or another amount, your support joins with gifts from across the CHS community to help increase the funding available for bursaries.
If you would like to donate through Direct Debit all you need to do is visit our secure web page or get in touch with us to request a donation form (and please sign the Gift Aid Declaration) and we will do the rest. If you prefer to donate via Standing Order and instruct your bank to make regular payments, please contact ER and we will send you the relevant bank details.
Can I leave a gift in my will?
Leaving a gift in your will is a way of giving something back to the School without a cost to you during your lifetime, a way of leaving something that will be appreciated by future generations of students and leave a lasting legacy.
The 1855 Society was set up in honour of those who have left a legacy to the School and to recognise those Old Waconians who are leaving a gift in their will. If you have chosen to remember CHS in your will and have not informed the School, or if you are considering making a bequest to the School in your will, please let us know by completing this form to inform us of your intentions. The form is not a binding document, it will simply enable us to show our gratitude for your gift during your lifetime and make you a member of the 1855 Society. We can also provide you with further information about the impact of your legacy.
