Grandmaster in the Making: Junior School Pupil Secures National Chess Semi-Final Spot

Academic, Community News

It takes a unique blend of composure and strategic thinking to compete on the national stage, and Noah (Year 1) has demonstrated both in abundance during a remarkable run of competitive chess. He has proven that age is no barrier to excellence, following a string of sensational performances in both regional and national tournaments.

Last month, Noah competed in the UK Chess National Megafinals. Despite being only five years old at the time and competing in the Under 8 category, he showed maturity beyond his years against much older and more experienced opponents. Winning five out of his six games, he finished 2nd out of 32 participants, bringing home a well-deserved silver medal.

This brilliant result means Noah has now qualified for the Delancey UK Chess National Gigafinals. To reach this level at just five years old, placing him among the top candidates in the country for his age group, is a truly remarkable feat.

Noah’s success isn’t limited to individual play; he has also been a vital asset to his county. Earlier this year, he represented Cheshire and North Wales in the UK Chess Team regional semi-finals. Once again, as the youngest player in the field, he performed exceptionally well, helping his team achieve 2nd place and a spot in the National Team Final.

Closer to home, our young strategist has been a dominant force at CHS Junior School’s weekly chess club, recently securing trophies in both the Infant and Junior competitions. His passion for the game is infectious; his mum notes that he has already inspired many of his Year 1 classmates to pick up a board and join the club.

We are immensely proud of Noah’s dedication, sportsmanship, and the way he has encouraged his peers to take up this strategic game. We wish him the very best of luck with his training and his upcoming matches for the Gigafinals in July.

We’re all behind you, Noah!
