Cup Win for U11 Footballers in Season Finale

Congratulations to CHS’s U11 footballers who are celebrating the season end – and their final Junior School football competition – as Cup Winners of the West Area School Association’s, Neville Holt Football Cup.

CHS took two teams to the tournament at Hursthead Primary School and their latest win follows recent success as undefeated AJIS Football and Rugby Cup winners.

CHS Junior Boys’ Games and Fixtures Co-ordinator, Mr Jonny Cartwright said: “The boys showed grit and determination having finished second in the group but coming back to win. The opposition schools played some excellent football and it was by no means an easy afternoon – they had to really pull together for this one!”

Despite the April date and promise of good weather, heavy rain made for some dreadful conditions for the West Area School Association, Neville Holt Football Cup. Cheadle Hulme School entered two teams, Yellows and Greens, and faced sides from local Primary schools including Hursthead, Bradshaw Hall, Greenbank, Lane End and Cheadle Roman Catholic.

Greens were unfortunate in their group and despite some excellent football and strong individual performances, they were unable to progress out of the group stage. The Yellow team got off to a slow start, drawing their first game and losing the second game 1-0 to Hursthead. However, they eventually found their form beating CRC and Bradshaw Hall in the group stages, followed by a 2-0 victory over CRC A Team in the semi –final with great finishes from Bolingbroke and Carroll.

In the final the Yellow team faced Hursthead A, the only team to have scored against them and beaten them. In a close game where Bollingbroke hit the bar twice, it ended 0-0… onto penalties. There was no stopping Oli Davies, who stepped up to take the first penalty; he drilled it past the keeper into the back of the net. James Pozzoni placed himself in the middle of the goal and stopped Hursthead’s first penalty with relative ease. 1-0 CHS Yellows.

Next up Henry Sawer belted the ball into the top left-hand corner of the net and despite his best efforts, the opposition goalkeeper stood no chance. With the score at 2-0 to CHS Yellows, Pozzoni took his place back in the net and expertly stopped Hursthead’s second penalty attempt. Final Score, CHS Yellows 2- 0 Hursthead A.

James Pozzoni played excellently throughout, living up to his nickname “The Wall”. Archie Iddon showed outstanding leadership as always, and the rest of the team should all be proud of their efforts in the way they played together in their final game as the CHS U11 Football team for 2017/2018.

Credit to Henry Sawer for stepping up and playing excellently in the absence of Uprichard and Pimlott and congratulations to the entire team who have played brilliant football throughout the year. They have made themselves and the School proud and deserved all of the silverware they have earnt along the way.

Thank you to the parents and range of staff who have braved the wide variety of weather conditions and travelled across the North West to coach and support this fantastic group of boys.
