Academic Skills Shine for Winners of Head’s Essay Competition

The winners of the Head’s Essay Competition have been announced.

CHS’s Head, Mr Neil Smith said: “I was hugely impressed by the interest in the competition, the quality of entries, and the range of topics that students chose to write about.

“Entries were submitted on topics as wide-ranging as the impact of the war on France, on the treatment of mental health issues and on individual family members. It was clear that everyone who took part gave a lot of thought to their subject matter and how best to research it.

“The very best essays combined sharp analysis with evidence of independent research. Deciding on the winners of each age category was incredibly difficult, and I hope that everyone who entered both enjoyed the process of researching and writing, and is inspired to do further work on their chosen topics.”

Open to all pupils in Years 5-13, the contest was launched by Mr Smith as a challenge to carry out research and write about a topic of general interest outside of the curriculum.

Exploring the theme of ‘The Impact of the First World War’ to link with the School’s commemoration of the end of the war in 1918, pupils could pick their own area to research, which may have been impacted by the historical event.

Mr Smith judged the essays on the quality of research, explanation, discussion and evaluation across four age-group categories and each winner received an Amazon vouchers for their efforts.
