CHS Remembers… 1943

The CHS Community gathered together today to commemorate the fallen during the School’s annual Service of Remembrance.

Standing in front of the Main Building, the School joined together and heard readings from CHS Head, Mr Neil Smith; Deputy Head (Pupil Welfare), Mrs Susan James; Deputy Head (Academic), Mr Nick Axon; Deputy Head (co-curricular and community), Mrs Caroline Dunn; CHS Junior School Head, Mr Vincent Weightman; Head of Geography, Mrs Cohen; Upper School pupils Oliver, Luna, Ted; Lower School pupils Idris and Astrid; and Head Pupils Naisha, Jonathan and Maya.

The poignant readings were shared in memory of those who lost their lives in the war, as well as those lives who have been irreversibly changed by the impact of conflict and war throughout the years.

CHS musicians initiated a 2-minute silence with the Last Post, while the School House flags of Allen, Clarke, Marsh, and Whitehead were respectfully lowered.

Poppy sticks, marked by pupils with the name of someone they wanted to remember were placed in a field of remembrance, as well as 16 memorial silhouettes created by DT Technician Mr Angus Tulloch, in remembrance of Old Waconians who died during the war.

Three wreaths were laid before the Main Building and the names of Old Waconians who died in 1943 were read aloud by Old Waconian, Tony Foulkes, Class of 1965.

At the War Memorial Sundial in front of the Sixth Form Centre, a smaller ceremony followed. The three Head Pupils laid wreaths, and Reverend Pickles, Rabbi Bank, and Head, Mr. Neil Smith delivered readings.
