Essay Competition Launched By Richard Barker, Class of 1986

Keen writers and young entrepreneurs at CHS will be putting pen to paper in an annual essay competition thanks to Old Waconian Richard Barker, Class of 1986.

Made possible by former CHS student, Richard – a Professor in Accounting at the University of Oxford’s Saïd Business School – The Richard Barker Oxford Essay Competition will allow students to develop their persuasive writing skills and further their understanding of good business. 

The competition will work alongside the School syllabus and will provide the winning student with an opportunity to visit Oxford’s Saïd Business School.

Students have until 19th May to submit their essay, giving their response to the essay title; Do you agree with Milton Friedman (1970) that the social responsibility of business is to increase its profits?, as set by Richard in consultation with CHS Head of Business and Economics, Mr Conor McCauley.

Shortlisted students will be invited to give a presentation to Richard on their essay, after which he we ask questions and give feedback.

The winner will be announced by the end of the academic year.
