“A different language is a different vision of life.” Federico Fellini

At CHS we want our pupils to question why we are such reluctant language learners in the UK. Languages are so important and English simply is not enough. Language learning at CHS develops the pupils’ ability to communicate effectively in one, two or sometimes three foreign languages.

Whilst consolidating reading and writing skills, we emphasise the importance of cultural insight, reinforcing a positive attitude to language learning and to other cultural perspectives. The focus throughout is on the use of authentic language in practical situations, and class work consists of a variety of practical linguistic tasks, many linked to audio-visual material.

Grammar is by no means neglected, however, and pupils are encouraged to exercise and analyse the structures both of the languages that they study and, as a consequence, those of English.
