Mathematics

“One of the essential emanations of the human spirit, a thing to be valued in and for itself, like art or poetry” – Oswald Veblen, American Mathematician

The Mathematics Department is staffed by highly experienced graduate Mathematicians and has a long-standing history of exceptional results.

We continuously strive to achieve the right balance between support (to maintain confidence) and stretch (to maintain genuine challenge). This ensures that we get the very best out of each and every one of our students.

All students have the opportunity to enter the national Maths Challenge run by the UK Mathematics Trust. This Challenge has Junior, Intermediate and Senior levels, giving each age group a chance to take part. Every year we have students who achieve the highest levels of success and our most able students routinely qualify for the prestigious follow-on competitions. In addition to the individual Maths Challenge, we also enter groups of students for the team events which take place throughout the year.

As well as running weekly Maths Clinics, several A Level Mathematicians take part in the Mathematics Peer support scheme, providing support to younger students in the School.
